A good week

Last week was a bad week. This week, following on from a helpful Zoom Quaker Meeting on Sunday, has been good.

1/    I've been making progress with my painting;

2/    Cece (8) FaceTimed me when I was painting on Monday and asked if I'd like her to read me a story while I was painting and I said Yes! and she read me two and it was simply heavenly. I can't express how heavenly.

3/    My sister sent me some old photos she'd found while clearing out, including this one of me (right) painting her nails in the bath when we were teenagers:

4/    I had a lovely sunny walk with Liz on Tuesday;

5/    I watched the version of Jane Eyre that was shot at Haddon Hall (near Bakewell) on BBCiPlayer. It's one of my favourite versions, despite the fact that it skimps on the development of the relationship between Jane and Rochester and misses out some of my favourite scenes. The two principals - Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender - are so right for the parts; and the scene where Jane says

“Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong! - I have as much soul as you, - and full as much heart! And if God had gifted me with some beauty and much wealth, I should have made it as hard for you to leave me, as it is now for me to leave you!”

is so moving.

6/    On Tuesday evening Chrissie and I had a hilarious margarita FaceTime, in which we played Subjective Guess Who, as described in my last novel Even When They Know You. (BTW, is there anyone out there who has read it and liked it and not reviewed it yet?)

7/    Dave washed the kitchen and bathroom floors, thereby elevating his status to demi-god.

8/    I had a lovely and such a welcome FaceTime with my friend Het.

9/    Zoë sent me this, which really made me laugh:

Last week I was 9.

This week I am somewhere between 4 and 6, and I don't mean 5.

Which one are you?

That sounds like a much better week for you, Sue. I just wanted to say how much I loved that photo of you and your sister. I looked at it for absolutely ages- such an interesting composition and a touching picture of sisterly affection. How lovely it must be to see that youthful incarnation of yourself! Would your mum have taken the photo? Can you remember it being taken?
I’m at about a 7 at the moment in the wellbeing stakes, as I’m currently in a bubble with my daughter and her family near Ashbourne. It certainly beats living alone right now and I’m enjoying feeling useful, helping the 7 year old twin grandchildren with their home schooling.
Warm wishes from South Lakes Sue.

Hi Sue
I don't remember the taking of the photo. I knew there was a photo - I had seen it before - but I did not have a copy. Perhaps it was lost in the fire.
You are so lucky to be staying with your grandchildren! Enjoy!

I probably aught to watch Jane Ayer then I would know what Michael Fassbender is like as an actor - and maybe would realise where I have seen him before (as a young magneto in xmen apparently) I’m not good at remembering actors names so I have been thinking long and hard as to who could play Dave.
Our Son Cris moved in with us at the beginning of lockdown, supposed to be temporarily until he found more work. Hes still here 10 months on, having turned 30 in the meantime and I am so grateful for his companionship, tales of his nocturnal online game final fantasy (?) his 3D design and 3D printing.
Yesterday I showed him your story of the padlock (which has resonance with our canal boat holidays from his childhood) and asked him if he could suggest an actor to play Dave, he had no immediate suggestion although he is familiar with Michael Fassbender.
During his time with us Cris has had us revisit the entire Marvel franchise and he has filled in the gaps of those he had not introduced us to previously. So he was very excited yesterday as “Wandavision “ came out on Disney plus (another influence so he could see other series only available through them -the Mandelorian, from the Star Wars franchise being one of them) Vision is played by Paul Bettanay - and suddenly I knew him from “A Knights tale” where he plays Chaucer (among my many favourite films) We both think he is a possible candidate for playing Dave.
As to Bette Davis - certainly was a 7 on Wednesday as I stayed in my dressing gown all day but did finally take the christmas decorations down leaving it all bare and dull. Looking forward to weekly sunday afternoon video call with grand-daughter admiring her dressing up clothes among other things! Oh for all this to be over.
