Casting

This week I’ve been rewatching (is that a word? I’ve just woken up from a nightmare and my brain is addled) As Time Goes By and loving it again. And I’ve been wondering how much of As Time Goes By’s success was due to Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer. Do you think the script would have been funny if someone else had played the leads?

as time goes by

Then I considered Last Tango in Halifax and decided that although the cast were brilliant, it would be a success whatever.

All this stemmed from a discussion I had with two friends who read my screenplay before I sent it off. They said how important the casting of Sol and Frances would be. I agreed.

The only other thing that’s bothering me is that someone who’s been reading my blog for years has just read BUT I TOLD YOU LAST YEAR THAT I LOVED YOU, and I am dying to know what she thinks! I only know her through the blog and I can’t email her because I don’t have her email address. It’s so infra-dig to put this on the blog, but hey, I’m not proud. So Marmee, tell me!

Oh my sue!! Apologies! This side I had a husband in and out of hospital for 2 months after a ruptured appendix...all seems well now SO: I so so loved this book...some parts I found deeply painful...wondered what it must be like to live with someone who so often responds in a dissonant manner...some parts of the storyline resonated so deeply ( had a time in our married life where I insisted on moving to a new area 1,500km from where we were) ...I was so moved , I laughed...I can't WAIT to see it on tv...also thought of Last Tango. And wondered if you had thought of Ralph Fiennes...I thought the book reminds one that you love a person...always you love a person. The person you love is where home is.

PHEW!
I am so relieved and so pleased you liked the book, Marmee. And also that you 'get' it. Yes. At the end of the day, love is the most important thing.
And I so agree with your last sentence, too. A few years ago, Dave and I had three weeks holiday (in Northumberland) and Isaac said - "That's the longest time you've ever been away from home" and I responded without thinking "But I wasn't away from home. Dave was there."

I am so pleased your husband is going to be all right. And I'm sorry for your worries.

And Ralph Fiennes is a great suggestion, but realistically, I think he'd consider himself too big to be in a TV serial.

And there you have displayed the selfishness of the writer - the response to the book critique first and then the response to personal misfortune. I am ashamed.
